Russia warns US against attacking Iran
The chief of Russia's General Staff, Nikolai Makarov, has warned the US against striking Iran over the country's nuclear program.
"The consequences, I believe, would be dreadful for Iran, as well as Russia, the entire Asia-Pacific community," Makarov said on Wednesday.
The Russian military chief further suggested that the United States might turn its military attention on the Islamic Republic once its operations in Iraq and Afghanistan have been completed.
Amid a US campaign to drum up support for new anti-Iran sanctions, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned on Tuesday that world powers would "regret" any moves against the country.
"If anybody seeks to create problems for Iran, our response will not be like before," Ahmadinejad said at a press conference in Tehran.
"Something will be done in response that will make them (the world powers) regret [their action]," the Iranian chief executive added. "However, we prefer they steer towards cooperation [with Iran]."
President Ahmadinejad made the remarks as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was wrapping up her visit to the Middle East, where she stopped in Qatar and Saudi Arabia to seek the backing of the Arab world's heavyweights against Tehran's nuclear drive.
Tehran says its nuclear program is directed at the civilian applications of the technology and has called for the removal of all weapons of mass destruction around the globe.
The West, however, accuses the country of seeking military ends in its pursuit. The United States has spearheaded efforts to slap new UN Security Council sanctions against Iran, after the country announced the production of the first batch of 20 percent-enriched uranium to make fuel for a medical research reactor in Tehran.

Russia will develop new nuclear missiles
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev says his country will develop new generation of nuclear missiles to protect its "national interests."
In an interview with state-controlled television channels, Medvedev said that the missiles will increase efficiency of Russia's nuclear deterrent.
Medvedev's comment came after Moscow said it has successfully tested a ballistic missile that struck its target across the country in the Russian Far East.
The country's latest missile test -- that involved a Bulava missile -- had earlier failed over the White Sea.
Officials say the Bulava missile is central to Russia's plan to revamp its ageing weapons arsenal.
"Of course, we will develop new systems, including delivery systems, that is, missiles," said Medvedev.
The development comes as on December 19, the US and Russia failed to reach a new agreement to cut their nuclear arms despite the termination of an earlier Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) signed in 1991.
In a meeting on the sidelines of the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen, US President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart failed to reach an agreement on the terms of a deal to replace START.
The Kremlin chief however went on to add that Moscow is determined to develop missiles. "Of course, we will develop new systems, including delivery systems, that is, missiles."
The new missiles would be developed based on arms deals signed between Moscow and Washington, he concluded.

Medvedev Unveils “World Currency” Coin At G8.
Russian President shows reporters example of “united future world currency”
In a highly symbolic moment at the G8 summit in Italy today, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev unveiled to reporters a coin representing a “united future world currency”.
“We are discussing both the use of other national currencies, including the ruble, as a reserve currency, as well as supranational currencies,” the Russian leader said at a news conference.
However, those who have downplayed the formulation of a world currency by dismissing it as merely a progression of SDR’s (Special Drawing Rights) and not something that would physically be used by citizens in a system of world government, were contradicted when Medvedev clearly outlined that the new currency would be “used for payment” by citizens as a “united future world currency”.
“This is a symbol of our unity and our desire to settle such issues jointly,” Medvedev said.
“Here it is,” Medvedev told reporters today in L’Aquila, Italy, after a summit of the Group of Eight nations. “You can see it and touch it,” reports Bloomberg.
The question of a supranational currency “concerns everyone now, even the mints,” Medvedev said. The test coin “means they’re getting ready. I think it’s a good sign that we understand how interdependent we are.”
Medvedev explained that the coin had been minted in Belgium and bears the words “unity in diversity”. An RIA Novosti report noted that the coin represented an example of a “possible global currency”.
China and Russia have repeatedly called for a new global currency to replace the dollar.
When confronted about plans to supplant the dollar with a new global currency, both Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner denied that such an agenda existed.
However, just days after he told a Congressional hearing that there were no plans to move towards a global currency, Geithner sought to please the elitist CFR by assuring them that he was “open” to the notion of a new global currency system.
The scandal-ridden and highly secretive Bank For International Settlements, considered to be the world’s top central banking power hub, released a policy paper in 2006 that called for the end of national currencies in favor of a global model of currency formats.
The global currency would be a key central plank of a future system of world government. Earlier this week, Pope Benedict called for a “world political authority” to manage the global economy.
Here is a close up of the coin.
